After Yasser Arafat’s death, Kaddumi succeeded him according to the constitution as a new Fateh chairman.
Farouq Kaddumi sparked controversy in July 2009, just few weeks before Fateh conference, when he accused the acting Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Fateh’s former security chief Muhammad Dahlan of involvement in the assassination of Yasser Arafat. Both Abbas and Dahlan denied these accusations.
Kaddumi also criticized the decision to convene the Sixth Fateh conference in Bethlehem, occupied Palestinian territory, where many exiled Fateh members were unable to participate.
On September 10, 2009 PLO’s Executive Committee decided during its meeting in Ramallah to oust Farouq Kaddumi and President Abbas took over Kaddumi’s post of the chief of PLO’s Political department.
