Salah al-Taamri, a member of Fateh, was minister of youth and sports in the emergency government formed in October 2003 and retained this position in the government formed between November 2003 and February 2005. He first held a position in the PA cabinet in August 1998, as minister of state and a member of the negotiations affairs department in charge of issues concerning Israeli settlements. He lost his position in the 2002 cabinet reshuffle and went on to lead support for a no-confidence motion on 11 September 2002, which led to the collective resignation of the PA cabinet.

He was born in 1943 in Kuwait to a police station worker who moved to Kuwait at a young age. He holds a BA in English literature from Cairo University. In 1965 he joined Fateh and became secretary general of the General Union of Palestinian Students (GUPS) in Cairo. He became a Fateh commander in Jordan in 1967, and took control of the Karama base. He married Dina Abdel Hamid, King Hussein’s ex-wife.
He left Amman after the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Central Committee intervention in 1971. He then worked in south Lebanon as head of the PLO youth wing. In 1982 he was arrested by the Israeli military in Sidon and after three months of solitary confinement he was transferred to Ansar prison camp in southern Lebanon where he became chairman of the detainees committee.
He won a position in the PLC as an independent, representing Bethlehem district. He was not placed on the official Fateh slate and became a member of the PLO Central Council. He was appointed spokesman of the Palestinian Authority’s “Emergency Committee for the Defense of Palestinian Lands”, and met British Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook at Jabal Abu Ghneim in March 1998. In May 2002 he led the Palestinian negotiating team to end the siege at the Church of the Nativity.
He lives in Zaatra, southeast of Jerusalem.
